True Tranquility
With us all becoming more reliant on communications and technology, we need power the whole time for on-board appliances, media and amenities – all of which are vital to creating the comfort that makes yachting such a rewarding experience.
Traditionally, away from shore-power, this has meant running generators 24/7. The diesel engines run regardless of the power being consumed, generating emissions, noise and notching up costly ‘running hours’.
But there are other options for owners looking to increase their available power with reduced generator runtime and lower emissions.
The Silent Yacht Hybrid Power electrical system utilises high-capacity inverters along with lightweight, high efficiency Lithium battery packs so that the generator only needs to be used for high power consumption activities (such as when galley and laundry loads are running).
This ensures the silent overnight operation of air conditioning, audio visual (a godsend when trying to enjoy music or watch a film) and sockets (meaning that guests can continue to use appliances without the generator running). Consequently, everyone on board can experience the true tranquility of a night at anchor. Likewise, during the day, they can dine outside and swim off deck, free from generator exhaust fumes.
Truly independent Power
Switching to a Lithium battery system offers a significant improvement on existing power technologies, including a far superior efficiency (the battery can be recharged to 90% in just two to three hours, so the system can be brought back to full power, ready for use again). They have a smaller battery footprint, giving you more power from the available space on-board, longer periods of power use and saving weight.
Furthermore, the batteries don’t need to be replaced as quickly, saving on cost in the longer term, and offer truly independent power that can easily be recharged from the engine, generator or shore power connection when needed.
Our technical team can help with specific requirements you may have for your bespoke refit and upgrades; adapting and scaling the system to fit your exact needs.
As an example, the Fairline Squadron 78 (one of the most successful vessels of its type) typically operate with twin generators at either 17 kW or 22.5 kW (dependent on model year).
With our lithium upgrade option for this boat, all loads can be inverter powered from a 40 kWh Lithium battery bank. (This is similar to the newest Nissan Leaf, which offers 168-mile range from a single charge.)
The system can be monitored by two touchscreens in the machinery space or via a glass bridge screen at the helm – and generator control is automated, so that you can set the system to auto and allow the controller to decide when a generator is needed.
The controller will start the generator at the optimum moment to ensure your batteries are fully charged for when your ‘quiet time’ starts.
Of course, if needed, the generator will be started to avoid losing power. But if this does happen at night, the system will only charge the batteries partially to minimise any generator running time –
offering you maximum peace and quiet whilst on board.
