From earthy tones to natural materials, our Design Director, Sarah Luck, takes a closer look at the trends that will make it big in 2023.

A new year means fresh ideas for yacht interiors. While some trends are certainly not going anywhere, there’s plenty of new inspiration too.

A Return to Nature

Whether it’s through flowing furniture, natural materials & textures or soft accessories, we’re bringing the outside in in 2023.

When you think about natural interior design, you wouldn’t instantly think of yachts, however there are plenty of ways to incorporate organic elements within a scheme to create a calm, harmonious environment on board.

This can be achieved through printed fabrics & natural wall coverings, and flowing organic forms through bespoke furniture design.

Natural stone countertops, splash backs and coffee tables are on the rise within residential interiors. We work with our stone partners to create solid stone pieces that are actually filled with an aluminium honeycomb inner, making them much lighter weight and suitable for yacht interiors.

Earth Tones

Following on from the natural elements, earth tones are key to modernising your space in 2023. I love using a fresh palette of off-whites with splashes of taupe, copper browns and beiges to subtly brighten and soften any part of your boat.

At SETAG, we are constantly developing ways to transform the outdated yacht interiors we work on. One of the most effective ways we’ve found is to either spray timber structures or leather wrap them in beautiful shades of taupe, which instantly freshens Saloons, Galleys & Cabins alike.

Sustainable Design

Within the world of sustainable design, we as designers no longer have to compromise on luxury or quality, due to the ever-increasing choice of innovative brands.

One of my favourites is Kirkby Design from the Romo group. They conducted a study into recycled products and sustainable materials which informed the creation of four innovative collections that reduce the impact on the environment. These incredible materials are constructed from Tencel Lyocell, Recycled Wool, Recycled Acrylic and 100% Recycled Polyester, which is sourced from recycled plastic bottles.

This collection of beautiful textiles is brilliant for everything from upholstery to soft furnishings and certainly still maintains a stunning, luxurious feel. Complete with an earth tone colour palette, you can be sure to see a rise in the inclusion of eco-friendly fabrics in the upcoming year.

Contrast Upholstery

Whether it’s a contrast in colour, texture or stitch detailing, this multi-fabric method to upholstery is certainly making a splash in the marine industry.

With sweeping designs and added practical elements, like enhancing areas of high traffic for durability, we are experiencing high demand for this multifunctional technique.

Excitingly, these designs result in a totally unique design suited specifically for each yacht, the highest level of bespoke upholstery.

A Return to Glamour

Taking it back to the roaring 1920’s, Art Deco is most certainly making a scene within the world of design. A century on, its unique shapes & stylish geometric patterns can elevate any interior to a new height of luxury.

I’m seeing an increased desire for beautifully printed textures and wall coverings, which can be utilised as incredible features that playfully draw your eye into and around a space.

Simple fluted stitch detailing to upholstery is also an elegant way of incorporating a sophisticated deco mood, whilst light fixtures are a simple way of subtly sending your space back to the 20’s.

2023 is the year for soft, modern interiors that evoke nature, peace and comfort. Handmade, bespoke pieces with sustainable credentials will be high in demand too. Combined, this will create interiors which promote wellbeing and uncompromising elegance.

We’re featured in the latest issue of All At Sea where we discuss why you might considering refitting your boat and the areas most commonly Remastered.

The ultimate level of luxury is personalisation, but bespoke does not have to mean building something from scratch. Instead, it can be taking something already exceptional and tailoring it to your specific liking. A refit is designed to match your lifestyle, from the smallest detail to the bigger picture. It should feel as natural a fit as slipping on your favourite item of clothing.

It should be just like coming home because that is where you are….

Over time, a helm station dashboard can begin to show its age – particularly if the boat has been in a hot climate for several years. Here at Setag, we believe all boats deserve to look and feel like new. A dash respray reinvigorates tired helm stations and leaves your boat looking modern and beautiful for many years to come.

At Setag, we can efficiently conduct a larger comprehensive project encompassing most, if not the entire yacht, or we can focus on one particular area. Often, rejuvenating a dash can be a stand alone project conducted on the owner’s berth.

UV Degradation

On this Princess V45 berthed in Swansea, the dash had been severely overexposed to sun damage which created an awfully sticky dash – potentially the worst our team have ever seen.

Using the original substrate as it was intended, allowed us to start again from scratch and apply the improved durable materials to fully restore the dash so that it will stand the test of time.

How long does a dash restoration take?

Transforming this back to new takes our expert team about 1 week from start to finish – the dash has to be totally stripped back to the original substrate before it can then begin the process of respraying step by step. Protection and preparation are a lengthy but vital process since, in most cases, the dash cannot be removed therefore the work is conducted in a makeshift tent aboard.

Wear and Tear

Modernised Helm

On our Targa 47 project, we completed a substantial remodel and respray to the console which was instigated by the desire to upgrade the navigation equipment.

For this substantial upgrade, we designed a completely new instrument layout with new dash panels to incorporate the latest state of the art navigation technology and VHF. We also resprayed the console to complement the fresh, modern refit of the whole yacht.

This 2009 boat now rivals the technology and luxury of a new factory build.

Why compromise when fitting the latest technology?

Brilliant concept...new boat look and feel at pre-owned prices - by the industry experts. Recycling at its best!
Briony Newington - Founding Partner, Fairline Yachts.
The great thing is, none of this is off the shelf - I love this boat and now she’s got her frock on...this is the best money I've spent.

If you want to redefine, refit and remaster your boat who better to do it than the people who designed it in the first place? "What a fantastic idea!"
Miles Morehouse – Marketing Director, Fairline
We cannot recommend the SETAG team highly enough. If you love your current boat, then for a fraction of the cost to change it, have it SETAG’d. The SY branding certainly helped us obtain a premium price. We got what we paid for her in 2017 plus what we spent with you!

I have worked with Chris for over 30 years and I’m pleased to see him develop his own brand - along with likeminded people with industry-leading expertise. The future is bright for Setag Yachts and pre-owned yacht owners, who can now refurbish their vessels to today’s - or even tomorrow's standards.
David King - Founder, Princess Yachts.
That has been one of the key selling points for us – having that personalised service and having a boat that is unique to us – is standout in its own right. We are pretty blown away…very very pleased. I think it’s fabulous…it has transformed the boat.

The perfect way to open up a new market: the "true reflection of luxury". Setag gets it: simplicity and personalisation are key – with the depth of knowledge to deliver.
James Barke – Managing Director of Boats.co.uk
Setag are probably the only company who can carry out all the tasks as a ‘one stop shop’. Other yards were reluctant to price work and needed to subcontract many tasks meaning higher costs and longer lead times. If you are in any doubt speak to Chris and his team, they know boats like no one else.
Delighted SETAG customer - Princess 460 Owner
We have been waiting for this quality of service: a comprehensive, professional refit that we can rely on – because of the pedigree of its staff, with over 200 years' experience in our market.
Christopher Head – Group Sales Director for Sunseeker London Group
You have put Princess magic into our beloved Broom.

Never have I come across a more able collection of professionals in this market. We have complete trust in Setag, since its team has been in the business for as long as we can remember. We're very excited to welcome this specialist refit company into our portfolio.
